LYDENBURG – A bomb threat at the FNB bank in Voortrekker Street forced the employees and customers to evacuate the premises on Friday.
A phone caller claimed that there was a bomb inside the building at 14:04.
According to SAPS spokesman, Capt Alfred Moela, an employee from Lydenburg FNB received a telephone call from a man who introduced himself to her as John. “The man told the employee that she must drop the phone and evacuate the bank because there was a bomb inside it. He claimed that he had also already informed the police, Phoenix Security and the K9 Unit, of the explosive device. The man said that he and all of the above mentioned units were on their way to the bank.”
Moela said that the employee informed her colleagues of the threat and they all evacuated the bank and reported the matter to the police.
“Lydenburg SAPS reported the matter to the Bomb Disposal Unit in Mbombela and White River K9 who drove to Lydenburg in a reasonable time. White River K9 searched all the bank offices with their dogs for any explosives. Nothing, however, was found. The Bomb Disposal Unit also conducted an inspection and after thoroughly inspecting all the offices, they were satisfied that there was no suspicious parcel. The bank was declared safe and reopened. A case of a bomb threat was opened and an investigation is unfolding,” Moela added.
