Victim tracks down phone thieves

"They gave me the name of the buyer who happened to be a Zimbabwean national. I visited the lady, she confessed to purchasing the phone, and kindly returned it," Tjie said.

BURGERSFORT – After his phone was stolen by gate-remote criminals a fortnight ago, Mr Jerry Tjie of Motloulela Village did not rest. He hunted down the criminals.

Today, Steelburger/Lydenburg News can reveal that Tjie is a happy man. He recovered his phone, a Samsung Galaxy that was stolen by the thieves that are terrorising shoppers in town.

According to Tjie, the suspects sold the cellphone to a Zimbabwean, who sent it to his family in Bulawayo. “After the thieves were arrested, I asked them where they had sold my phone.

“They gave me the name of the buyer who happened to be a Zimbabwean national. I visited the lady, she confessed to purchasing the phone, and kindly returned it,” Tjie said.

He added that he paid for the Zimbabwean’s trip to Bulawayo as he desperately needed his phone back. He claimed that he would ensure that he get back the money for the trip from the detained thieves.

According to Tjie, one thief who was arrested is also under investigation for a murder case in Tzaneen. “The Burgersfort police were glad that I managed to help catch the criminals. I hope they will face the wrath of the law.”
