Man bashed in the head for car

A man was bashed in the head and but luckily saved thanks to bystanders during an attempted hijacking two weeks ago.

MALALANE – Residents are urged to be extra careful when driving around town at night, following an attempted hijacking on September 26.

A resident headed out to help friends and, on his way back home, drove up Impala Street to withdraw money at FNB around 21:45. When he stopped at a three-way stop (Lorenco Street), a group of men approached the vehicle and pulled him out. They attacked him with a hammer and left him with three gaping wounds that had to be closed by 14 stitches.

Luckily a couple of bystanders came to his aid and the suspects fled without the vehicle.

Police are investigating the attempted hijacking.

The victim requested that he not be named due to the sensitive nature of the investigation.

Residents are cautioned to always lock their vehicle doors when travelling in town and to rather stick to areas with more traffic, especially late at night. If you spot someone following you, drive to the nearest police station or note the vehicle’s make, model and registration number and report your suspicions to the police or your security company.
