They provide a support system for those in need of advice, a shoulder to cry on or guidance on how to get their lives back on track.
They also partake in, and lead various humanitarian projects. The group’s outreach aims to improve the quality of life at school and in the community. One example is the Bergvlam Clothes Drive.
The latter is based on one of the school’s core values – ubuntu.
Pupil Raquel Barreto says, “Being a Vlammie means to be helpful wherever and whenever you can, because we believe in the principle of ubuntu: Umuntu Ngumuntu Ngabantu.”
On September 15 the councillors, headed by Ms Ane Bekker and assisted by Bergvlam’s public relations
officer, Ms Mandy Barnard, delivered clothes to Nelspruit Community Forum. They were donated by the group’s fellow Vlammies.
The delivery was specifically designated for Amakhaya/Ons Huis, a child and youth-care facility and Damascus Farm, where single men and families are housed.
