One person was killed and four others injured during a cash-in-transit heist shoot-out outside Elukwatini on Tuesday.The deceased is a security officer, two of the injured are also security officers and the other two are traffic officials.

A Fidelity vehicle was on its way to Lochiel from Elukwatini when a Mercedes-Benz crashed into their vehicle.The sedan was gold in colour, and the incident occurred at about 12:30.

According to Sgt Peace Mbokane, communications officer of Elukwatini SAPS, the pressure from the Mercedes resulted in the security vehicle overturning in the middle of the road.

“The occupants of the Mercedes opened fire on the security officers vehicle.

“One of the occupants was in a critical condition and later died. The others were seriously injured. Before they fled the scene two local traffic officials appeared. They were not aware of what had just transpired. The robbers opened fire on them and they were also injured.”

The suspects fled the scene with an undisclosed amount of money. “The police were alerted by community members who heard the gunshots. The traffic and Fidelity officers were rushed to hospital.”

No arrests have been made, and the police are currently investigating the matter.
