OHRIGSTAD – Angry residents of Majadichukudu blocked the R555 with burning tyres and stones as well as tree branches, demanding better services last Thursday.

“This community has no access to basic services like electricity, water and sanitation. There is nothing here. For years we have been staying here, but there is nothing we can point coming from the government,” said one of the community members.

Another resident, Trevor Mahlake, added, “We will close this road down until we are given answers. The Fetagkomo Greater Tubatse Municipality (FGTM) does not

care about us. We only see them during election time.”

According to the residents, FGTM sidelined them during their recent IDP presentations.”There are no services lined-up for the community of Majadichukudu, it’s like we are not the dwellers of this municipality,” they complained.

Ohrigstad SAPS’s communication officer, Sgt Kholofelo Phokane, said the residents started blocking the roads before the crack of dawn. “We got calls that the road was blocked at about 02:00, but we managed to monitor the situation and remove the tyres with the help of the local councillor.”

The newspaper forwarded queries to the municipality spokesman, Kubane Tolo, regarding the issue. At the time of going to press, no response had been received.
