Company helps to shorten hospital’s long wheelchair waiting list

Novasun, a company based in Nkomazi, donated 50 wheelchairs to Tonga Hospital to help shorten their waiting list of 165 patients.

TONGA – The local hospital’s wheelchair waiting list has decreased following a generous donation by a local company.

With a wheelchair waiting list of 165 in the current financial year, Tonga Hospital was in dire need of wheelchairs for patients.

The board decided to approach Novasun, and the company donated 50 wheelchairs valued at over R85 000 as part of its social-responsibility projects. The Department of Health also made 17 wheelchairs available.

They will be given to the first 67 patients on the waiting list. The department is currently working on plans to acquire more wheelchairs for the remaining 98.

The MEC for health, Mr Gillion Mashego, thanked Novasun for its gesture and the hospital for its initiative. “I hope other hospital boards will learn from this and take people’s needs seriously by seeking assistance outside of government,” he said.

The MEC also remarked that health needs grow every day.

“Our priority as a department is to ensure that we close the gaps where we can by working with various stakeholders. As government we cannot deliver health services alone.

“That is why we partner with many private companies and public entities to ensure that we deliver the best health service for the people of Mpumalanga,” Mashego said.
