Traffic was rerouted and trucks stopped by the side of the road for about 40 minutes before a few truck drivers rebelled and made a path through the debris.
Police managed to disperse the crowd somewhat and start to clean up the road, although they were hindered by community members.
Traffic was allowed to slowly move past Hectorspruit around 16:00 and by 16:30 traffic volumes had returned to normal. The situation remained uneasy and motorists still had to dodge trash or crunch over it.
A number of police officers remained on standby to monitor the situation.
