Municipal bakkie crashes into motorcycle

The TCLM bakkie crashed into the bike of Martin van den Berg (60) when it skipped a red light.

LYDENBURG – A bakkie of Thaba Chweu Local Municipality (TCLM) crashed into a motorcycle just after 14:00 this afternoon.

The accident occured at the traffic light opposite Okus restaurant.

According to Deon Broekman, local hazmat operator, the TCLM bakkie crashed into the bike of Martin van den Berg (60) when it skipped a red light.

Swift EMS and Netcare 911 paramedics treated a severely injured van den Berg on scene for more than an hour. He was taken to Lydenburg Hospital from where he was airlifted via helicopter to Milpark Hospital in Johannesburg.

Van den Berg is a local motorcycle rider who is frequently seen on his bike driving through town.

He sustained a severe leg fracture. His helmet was found several meters from the accident scene.

He suffered a previous head fracture in an earlier accident years ago.

More tests will be done to establish any other injuries.
