BHS Barbarians are ready to tackle Hoërskool Bergvlam head-on today

Barberton High School's first rugby team will play host to their Bergvlam counterparts today.

The eagerly awaited encounter will take place at the school sports ground at 11:25.

According to their coach, Jaun Pieterse the Barbarians as the first team are known, are having one of their best seasons this year.

“We are currently perched in position one in the Mpumalanga Medium School League. We are ranked 42 in the country to 100 schools. This is a great achievement considering that we are a small school,” said Pieterse.

The Barbarians currently lead the league with 20 points after four games.

Their last four results were as follows: they beat Curro Nelspruit 79-14, Sybrand van Niekerk 76-0, Penryn College 57-12 and Uplands 52-19.

They have scored a whopping 259 points in the four games and conceding 45. They are the school with the most tries, 40 in total. The closest one in Lowveld High.

Tsepo Malumane and Nathi Kubhayi.

Pieterse said they want to remain at the top of the log.

He attributes their success to the great facilities and technical staff they have.

“We have great gym facilities, a medical centre and staff and most of the boys are now staying in the school hostel. We started to prepare last year September already,” he said.

Several of the players have also been selected for provincial teams.

These include Tsepho Malumane and Nathi Kubhayi, who have been picked for the Mpumalanga Craven Week tournament that will be played from July 8 to 14 in Paarl in the Western Cape.

Eight players have been selected for the Mpumalanga Academy u/18 rugby team. They are Delron Zwane, Muzi Zondi, Dillon Hesselman, Jaundre Jooste, Martinus Venter, Mncedisi Maseko, Chris Liebenberg, Vincenzo Naidoo, Lindelani Sibiya and Johandre de Lange.
