For his birthday, Dave embarked on an epic and selfless journey on September 1 and was meant to finish 45 days later on October 16 (his birthday).
In spectacular fashion, it only took him 40 days and 40 nights, and in the process far exceeded the target amount of money he sought to raise. The funds will be split evenly and donated towards the Nelspruit SPCA and the Nelspruit Marathon Club in aid of assisting developing runners. Thanks to the assistance of various parties, Dave managed to raise R61 585.
He was initially planning on doing 40 to 50 kilometres per day but, as he was running through the Karoo, he also ran during the evenings, and some days finished more than 60 kilometres, putting him ahead of schedule.
Besides completing over 100 long-distance running events, he has completed 10 Comrades Marathons, 10 Loskop Ultra-marathons, run from Mbombela to Pietermaritzburg in 16 days in 2014, followed by a Comrades three days later, completed the New York City Marathon in 2015, finished the Richtersveld Trail Run in Namibia in five days (200 kilometres), finished the Wild Coast Trail Run in three days (112 kilometres) and completed the Jerusalem Marathon in 2016, and now, this can be added to his repertoire.
He eventually reached Cape Town on October 11. “I’m finished running. Not for life, but for October at least,” he told Lowvelder at the end of his 1 900-kilometre jog.
The end of this journey has brought many kind and loving souls from many different walks of life together in unity for a common cause,” he said.
Dave spent two weeks in Cape Town and Langebaan with his family, enjoying the rest and relaxation after 40 days and 40 nights of traversing on foot from Mbombela to Cape Town.
He wished to thank each and every person who sent messages, donations, support, love, prayers, positive thoughts, caring gestures and to everyone who ran with him, sponsored food and accommodation, helped with administration, design, social media, answering emails and drawing up maps, just to mention a few.
