LYDENBURG – Police in town are investigating a case of attempted murder after a woman suffered severe burn wounds when a mixture of boiling water and fish oil was thrown over her.
According to Capt Alfred Moela, communications officer at Lydenburg SAPS, the incident occurred last Sunday. “Siyabonga Nkosi (29) and Nellie Moya (27) were romantically involved but recently broke up.
Nkosi saw Moya at one of the taverns in town on Sunday and approached her in order to convince her to rekindle the relationship. Moya refused, and Nkosi was seen leaving the tavern.”
Moela said she soon after went to the bathroom. “Upon her return, she found Nkosi in the passage of the restrooms. No one knows how he managed it, but he had a container filled with boiling water and fish oil. He threw the mixture over Moya’s entire body, leaving her with severe burns. Community members tried to apprehend him, but he managed to escape.”
Moela said Nkosi later phoned the police and informed them of his whereabouts. “He left the hideout armed with two kitchen knives and a screwdriver. In the meantime, police were questioning the severely injured victim in Lydenburg Hospital about what transpired. Nkosi was immediately arrested after Moya gave her statement.”
He said Nkosi appeared in Lydenburg Magistrate’s Court on Monday. He was refused bail and will remain in custody until his next court appearance on February 28. Moela urged residents to get help for any relationship issues to avoid cases like the one above.
“You have pastors and your elders to guide you through relationship problems. Do not take matters into your own hands. Seek advice and leave an abusive relationship as soon as possible.”
