The artist will lead a walkabout at the exhibition on April 27.
Duncan Butchart was the guest speaker at the latest exhibition at the White River Gallery at Casterbridge Lifestyle Centre.
“A Sense of Place”, an exhibition by Karin Daymond, will be open until later in May, with a walkabout with Karin on April 27.
Buchart has lived in the Lowveld for twenty years and his speech highlighted what a multifaceted process it is to find ways of becoming close to a new home and one’s sense of place.
Dana MacFarlane, manager of the White River Gallery, introduced him to guests. Afterwards Daymond herself addressed those present.
Inspired by visits to Mapungubwe, Kgalagadi, and from reflections on her own veranda, Daymond will present a new series of soulful landscapes, reflecting emotions stirred through her sensory experience of place.
In addition, a series of “lichen portraits” will capture the curious and secretive world of lichens, brought alive through Daymond’s fascination with this intriguing species.
“Although a work starts from a geographical point, it quickly becomes my inner space,” Daymond said. “I become involved with the possibilities of paint and design; how they can be used to describe an environment, but also how the marks, textures, patterns can capture the energy and rhythm of both the external and internal landscapes that I associate with a place.”
She has worked from a studio in Mbombela since 2008, following many years of teaching. Her primary medium is large-scale oil painting. Drawing and printmaking, particularly lithography, form an integral part of her work.
