Her green thumb shows her passion

"At times I buy water to ensure that the flowers are fresh and healthy. It is a struggle, but they are part of me. Flowers are life. Some of them I picked from the veld, others I bought off the streets and from nurseries."

BURGERSFORT – Her love of flowers has inspired a local woman to succeed in a floral business.

Poppie Ngwana’s (52) love of plants dates back to the ’90s. Despite living in a village that has water challenges, she has risen against all odds to cultivate flowers at her home in Apiesdoring.

Arriving in her yard, one is greeted by the scent of roses and various other plants.

Growing up I enjoyed picking flowers and cultivating them in my yard. At this stage I have more than 120 plants. These include ferns, aloes and different kinds of flowers and plants. I do not even know the names of some. But seeing them growing and decorating my yard gives me joy,” said the mother of two.

Ngwana said getting started in the floral business does not have to require much capital. “That is because you can start the business at home with a large cooler.”

She told Steelburger/Lydenburg News that during rainy seasons, she ensures that she keeps water in her buckets and big containers to water her plants.

“At times I buy water to ensure that the flowers are fresh and healthy. It is a struggle, but they are part of me. Flowers are life. Some of them I picked from the veld, others I bought off the streets and from nurseries.”

Ngwana said she was acknowledged by the municipality officials in 2015. “They visited my man-made nursery and promised to assist with water, fencing and to erect a small nursery for me. They are yet to fulfil their promises, but I wish one day they will come and assist where possible.”

She sells the plants from as little as R70, depending on the size. “At first I just wanted to decorate my yard, but I was advised to sell them by people who were interested in my plants.”
