Women’s Day celebrated at Gustav

The community and Terra Events celebrated Women's Day by raising funds for underprivileged girls and women in town.

They participated in a five-kilometre fun walk and 10-kilometre trail run that took place last Friday at the Gustav Klingbiel Nature Reserve.

Over 200 entries were received, and men who participated in the event were asked to dressed up as women. Each participant also had to donate a sanitary product for women.

According to Charlene Coetzee, from Terra Events, her main focus was to collect women’s sanitary products for women and girls who do not have the means to buy.

“A woman is not just a mother, a business women, a nurse, a caregiver, a cook, a friend, a wife or a taxi service, she is all of the above. Women’s Day for me is to celebrate women. We need each other in life to pick us up when we are down or feeling alone.”

The event concluded with surprise gifts and lots of lucky draws. Irene Verster won a hamper for the girl who finished first, Sulvana Westcott won a Black+Decker drill, and Reinhardt Joubert was awarded a certificate for the first man to finish the race.

“With the municipality’s assistance, we have selected a community in Mashishing that will benefit from the donations. The other beneficiaries are Estralita School, Wenakker and other state institutions,” Coetzee commented.
