More than 140 cats face an uncertain future with rescue’s imminent closure
Natureza Cat Rescue is a sanctuary in Sabie

Natureza’s Cat Rescue’s 145 cats may soon be homeless. The sanctuary is facing severe financial constraints, which might force it to close its doors.
The shelter was founded by Susan van Zyl seven years ago. She said she will have to give them away to those who can accommodate them, if they do not receive help urgently.
Her husband has been doing most of the funding of food and all the other needs for the past years, however, he has been forced to take early retirement.

“We hardly get assistance from the public, and the few local businesses that assist, us give us what they can. A day ago we received food for the cats, however, we will still need more soon. These cats are like family to me and it is not easy to know I will not be able to help any cats if I do not get the funds needed,” said Van Zyl.
According to Van Zyl, they urgently need to get some of the cats new homes, but homeowners do not adopt like they used to.
“The funds we get during adoptions are then used to keep the place going. We also need to sterilise the cats and some need to be taken to the vet for medical attention.

“I love what I do and do not want to close the rescue. We also have some dogs, some of which are from the surrounding areas.

Of some, I know the owners, of others I do not. They just love coming to our home and we are together as a family.
Some cats were left behind by their owners when they moved away to other towns. We then go and fetch them and take them in,” she said.
Van Zyl said she is trying to source donations, however, much more is still needed. Visit Natureza’s Catz Rescue Sabie on Facebook for more information.
