Smile and compliment people when they are having a bad day. This is the motto of Candice Slamdiel (25), a petrol attendant at Engen garage on the corner of the N4 and Kaapsehoop Road.

“My dad taught me that your happiness comes from your background and what you have learned. He might not have given me education, but he taught me to be respectful,” she said. She is originally from Port Elizabeth and started working at the local filling station in July.

Slamdiel came to Mbombela for a fresh start. She said when she saw the filling station, she knew she wanted to work there.

“It was as if the Holy Spirit took me there. I went in and tried my luck, and I made sure that I was myself, and I got the job,” she said.

“I got a second chance in life looking at my past experiences. I am still trying to get my ducks in the row and I know this is a good opportunity for me,” she concluded.
