Donations pour in for children of the Lowveld

Woolworths recently surprised Pediatric Care Africa (PCA) with a donation of brand-new clothing.

According to André Hattingh, founder of PCA, the clothes will be equally distributed among the residents of the Paradise camp in Lydenburg and the Magalela camp near White River.

In the meantime, the organisation has helped several more children that needed medical help and who were identified during visits to squatter camps and neglected communities in the Lowveld.

A four-year-old girl with cerebral palsy, from the Brondal squatter camp, was seen by a paediatrician in Mbombela as well as a dietitian to establish the best way forward for her care. PCA is set to ensure the best quality of life for her and she has already started with her first occupational therapy session at Stepmed in the city.

That included guidance for her mother on how best to do the girl’s exercises at home.

Another seven-year-old girl suffering from cerebral palsy, but her mother does not have a medical aid, has been taken care of by the organisation.

“Her medical and dietary needs are quite expensive, and her condition calls for many special needs,” Hattingh said.

“We have started our journey with her by having her checked out from head to toe by a specialist paediatrician, and a dietitian will attend to her dietary requirements soon.”

She requires extensive and regular physiotherapy and occupational therapy for her physical development, combined with regular medical check-ups, to monitor her health in general.

She currently needs about five big tins of vanilla-flavoured Pediasure per month and uses quite a few number 5 nappies per day.
