Good Samaritan builds church for community

"I then decided to build a proper structure for them. It took me five months to finish the project. I am glad that I achieved my goal."

BURGERSFORT – The United Pentecostal Church (UPC) in Riba Cross has a new place of worship. This is all thanks to local businessman, Shawn Davids. He has constructed a magnificent building for the churchgoers.

It was officially handed over to the community on Monday.

“I learned of the UPC members’ challenges last year. They travelled long distances to attend church sermons in Burgersfort. Some couldn’t afford taxi fares and couldn’t attend.

The newly built church.

“I then decided to build a proper structure for them. It took me five months to finish the project. I am glad that I achieved my goal.”

He said he is grateful to suppliers who sold some of the products to him on discount.

“Several shops assisted with the equipment. I thank them for making this project a success.”

Sinky Mpuru, a pastor at UPC, told Steelburger/Lydenburg News that they are thankful that God brought them a good Samaritan.

“When I told my congregation that someone who owns a restaurant has volunteered to help in improving our church, most thought I was joking,” said Mpuru. “We’re very excited and grateful for this to be accomplished and done. May God bless Davids and his business.”

Sinky Mpuru Mkhondo recieves the church keys from Shawn Davids.

He also owns Shawn’s Ice which supplies ice cubes all over Tubatse. On Sunday the new buildings will be used by the congregation for the first time.
