Damaged bridge a concern to pupils and community

"It has become the norm that on rainy days we make our way to the river early in the morning to help the children across," said one of the resident.

BURGERSFORT – It is a huge challenge for Mokobola Primary School pupils in Mabotsha to attend classes when it is raining. They risk their lives crossing the flooded river on the way to school. The bridge that was supposed to help the learners cross was damaged by floods in January this year.

Locals said the bridge was poorly built and not tarred. They feel the contractors did shoddy work. The children are often assisted by community members and teachers when crossing.

“It has become the norm that on rainy days we make our way to the river early in the morning to help the children across,” said resident, Thapelo Mafane.

Teachers are also affected. They are forced to park their cars a few kilometres from the school.

Fetakgomo Tubatse Local Municipality’s communications officer, Thabiso Mokoena, said they were aware of the challenges faced by the school.

“An inspection was done on the access bridge and, while sourcing funds for the repairs, an alternative route will be created to enable the community to cross.”
