The minister further announced that of the R1,2 billion, an amount of R400 million has been allocated to farmers within the Proactive Land Acquisition Strategy Programme.
The Covid-19 relief intervention is aimed at sustaining food production for the coming six months.
The qualifying criteria as outlined by the minister entail that a farmer needs to be a South African citizen who has been actively farming for a minimum of 12 months and is currently in the production season or cycle, that he be registered on farmer register, commodity database or provincial database, and that he be a smallholder farmer with annual turnover between R50 000 and R1 million.
Farmers will be assisted by the government.
“The adjudication will priorities women, youth and people with disabilities,” added Ndalane.
The application for this funding has been opened from April 8 and will close on April 22.
Application forms will be available on the department’s website, www.dalrrd.gov.za.
The department has instructed that all departmental service centres be open from today in order to help farmers with the applications.
