Hawks seize properties worth millions from illegal miners

The Hawks accompanied by SAPS units and other entities, conducted a whole day successful disruptive operation seizing R2 million worth of equipment.

BURGERSFORT- The Hawks seized 25 chrome stock piles and an excavator worth over R2 million on Friday in Driekop.

The multi-disciplinary operation included Public Order Police, Local Criminal Record Centre, K9, National Intervention unit, Department for Mineral Resources and Modikwa Mine security.

Some of the illegal mining areas in the province.

According to Limpopo Hawks spokesman Capt Matimba Maluleke the operation was in response to the ongoing scourge of illegal mining in Limpopo.

“The Hawks Serious Organised Crime Investigation accompanied by SAPS units and other entities, conducted a whole day successful disruptive operation at Modikwa Mine.

The Hawks confiscated some of the equipment.

” We managed to seize 25 chrome stock piles and an excavator worth a total estimated value of over R2 million.”

Properties worth more than R2 million were seized.

“The operation is a sequel to similar intelligence driven operations that were conducted at the beginning of the year in some parts of the province.”

Maluleke said  high intensity operations to address illegal mining activities in the province are still in the pipeline and no stone will be left unturned to arrest and convict those that are continuously perpetuating this illegal activities.
