Robbery leads to shoot-out at The Square in Mbombela

An eyewitness narrowly escaped death when she ended up in the crossfire.

A cross-pavement robbery occurred at The Square around 10:30 on Tuesday.

Anita McGarry, centre manager of The Square, has confirmed the armed incident and added that no serious injuries have been reported.

SAPS and the centre’s security company, Hi-Tech, are currently on the scene. “No further comment at this point as the investigation is already under way,” McGarry said.

An eyewitness, Harriet Makhanya, narrowly escaped death when she ended up in the crossfire.
She told Lowvelder that a Fidelity security guard had been robbed as he collected money at a store in The Square.

A shoot-out occurred between the suspects and an occupant of the nearby Fidelity cash-in-transit vehicle.
“We heard some shots and ran, fearing for our lives,” Makhanya said.

She could, however, not escape the crossfire, and luckily was only grazed by one of the bullets. She was treated on the scene.

The suspects fled with an unknown amount of cash and a firearm, in a white Volkswagen Polo with its rear window shot out.
