Birthday celebrations a historic affair
John Varty and his band, JV and the Tigers, celebrated his 70th birthday with a concert at the Barnyard White River over the weekend.

Surrounded by friends and family, everyone has a splendid time. Varty has survived cancer, a helicopter crash, being mauled by a tiger and a heart attack.

“He has a fierce love of nature conservation,” said Nicky Mcarthur of Mac Media Group. “He is such a colourful and passionate character.”

The concert was a birthday celebration, a celebration of his life, a glimpse of his photography and videography and a tribute to Rob Parsons, the pilot of the doomed helicopter, whose clever flying saved everyone’s lives.

Trish Parsons, Rob’s wife, gave a moving speech and Karen Slater, who made the famous walk from the crashed helicopter, also had a chance to address the crowd.

Elmon Mhlongo, the famous tracker, told the story of how he was going to jump from the helicopter as it was going down.

JV and the Tigers played the song “Chopper Man” and dedicated it to Rob. “The evening will go down in history as
a defining moment and a historic affair,” said Varty.
