Woman killed, child critically injured in accident near Barberton

An elderly woman was killed and two others, including a child, critically injured in an accident on the R40 near Barberton on Saturday.

They were among five occupants in the single-vehicle accident that occurred around midday. ER24 spokesperson Russel Meiring confirmed the incident and said the deceased had been pronounced dead on the scene. Her identity is not known at this stage.

“The two patients who were critically injured, a minor and a woman, had to be airlifted by provincial EMS services,” Meiring said.

The remaining two patients, both males, were rushed to hospital by the same emergency services and were in a serious condition. Their current condition, as well as that of the minor and the woman, is yet to be established.

The exact circumstances of the accident are also unknown at this stage as it is still under investigation. This is a developing story and more details will be provided as soon as they become available.
