Mpumalanga police hunt suspects who opened fire and injured two officers

Upon noticing the police vehicle, the suspects opened fire and a shoot-out ensued.

The Mpumalanga SAPS are looking for suspects that shot and injured two police officers. According to a statement by the Mpumalanga Hawks, the officers, aged 38 and 42, were shot and injured on Monday in Block C in Tonga near Komatipoort.

The spokesperson for the Hawks, Capt Dineo Lucy Sekgotodi, said that according to information received, the members had been on duty doing a routine patrol when they unknowingly drove by a business burglary in progress. Upon noticing the police vehicle, the suspects opened fire and a shoot-out ensued.

“The two members were rushed to hospital for medical attention after they sustained injuries during the shooting. There is no arrest at this stage, while the investigation is ongoing.” The provincial head of the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation, Maj Gen Zodwa Mokoena, strongly condemned the incident.

“An attack on the police is an attack on the state. We will therefore not leave any stone unturned and we will ensure that those who commit such heinous acts against our officers in blue are found and will face the full might of the law.”
