Mental Health Society a light in the dark
Reaching out for support is usually the first step on the road to recovery and to improve a sometimes desperate state of affairs.
Most mental health disorders and other disabilities can be successfully treated if the correct advice, help and treatment are provided. The two social workers at the Mpumalanga Mental Health Society, Thapelo Marobane and Matshediso Sebulele, provide specialised services for the community.
“We want to remind the community to knock on our door when they need help. Our services do not only pertain to mental health issues, it also includes helping people living with physical, intellectual or psychiatric disabilities,” said Sebulele.
The ladies recently assisted a girl (10) with a hearing impairment to be transferred from Marifane Primary School in Mashishing to the Silindokuhle Special School in Kwa-Lwgedlane, near Mbombela. The girl’s mother was not able to find the correct school for her.
The Mpumalanga Mental Health Society was initiated as a measure to ensure that disability policies are implemented. It ensures that people with disabilities are not discriminated against, but are integrated into the community.
“Our mission is to empower people, children and families to achieve and attain optimal mental well-being,” said Marobane.
The offices are located next to the Vodacom Complex, on the corner of Voortrekker and De Clerq streets, Lydenburg. The community is welcome to contact them if a home visit is required. Phone Sebulele on 081 424 0581 for more information and assistance.
