Explore your solar options with African Power Tech
African Power Tech is a young and dynamic specialist solar power supply company operating from White River. Byron Caldwell worked for Eskom for a number of years as a substation and power line technician.

“At the time and observing the escalation of load shedding and the general decay of things, and as a qualified electrician, I decided to investigate and invest time into learning the ins and outs of solar technology, inclusive of formal and practical training. “African Power Tech is but eight months old but it is our focus and intention that the systems we design and install, never load shed on you. Doing it right, the right way, the first time, every time” says Byron. “The first thing always – when considering an alternative source of electricity – is to determine your exact requirements. Meaning, do you want to go completely off the grid – do you only want to subsidise your current supply of electricity when the supplier (Eskom/municipality) load shed and if the latter, which appliances do you want to keep working during load shedding (power outages)?”
“Your motive should be clear because this will determine the design of your alternative supply and the cost thereof. Whatever the source of your electricity supply, lifestyle changes can also generate savings. This in conjunction with even just and elementary solar system can generate significant savings on your electricity expenses.”
“To design a solar system may seem simple but it is not and should be seen as the most important part, no use to invest in a substandard or underperforming system. Do your homework and ensure that you find a qualified and experienced contractor. Once you have received a detailed (this is very important) quote from a potential contractor, make the effort to gain the advice from other specialists in the industry before you commit. SA Standard 10142-2 and administered with the Dept of Labour, apply. Research the track record of your supplier and the warranties they offer and please compare apples with apples – it is wise to not just chase after the cheapest quotation,’ advises says Byron.
“Our supply, design and installation process starts with an in depth interview with the customer – a thorough inspection of the site – design and quotation and once approved, we revisit and discuss what the customer can expect and then follows installation and after service follow ups to ensure the system provides what was intended. “Considering the current supply of electricity, or lack of it from Eskom, it is wise to provide for yourself as much as you can. We would love to help you get it right and save you the school money heartache and frustration.”
