Trial for murder of Lt. Col Leroy Bruwer postponed to July

Accused Sinovuyo Salela (30) appeared at the Mpumalanga High Court today, June 8, where the matter was then postponed.

The trial of the man implicated in the 2020 murder of Lt Col Leroy Bruwer has been postponed to July 6 this year.

He appeared in the Mpumalanga High Court today, June 8 where his trial was set down for July 6.

The trial of Sinovuyo Salela (30) was set to start at the Mpumalanga High Court on Monday June 6, but was postponed, according to the National Prosecuting Authority’s provincial spokesperson, Monica Nyuswa.

Bruwer was shot on his way to work on March 17, 2020.

Bruwer was a member of the Hawks. He specialised in serious organised crimes such as poaching and cash-in-transit heists.

In 2016 he was awarded the elite unit’s detective of the year award.

During his career Bruwer arrested various high-profile criminals.

Salela was charged with the murder of Bruwer, who was shot and killed on the R37 in March 2020. Salela handed himself over to the police in Tsolo in the Eastern

Cape on June 19, 2020 and was transported to Mbombela, where he has been held ever since.
