Roadside shopping helps local communities

Surrounding Hazyview are many self-built stalls alongside roads where locals sell fresh produce daily.

With Covid restrictions implemented in South Africa, the locals, who depend on their daily sales, have been struggling to cope. Communities surrounding Hazyview depend on the sales of fruit, vegetables, art and curios to tourists and locals.

Emma and her mother Daphney Komani started selling fruit in 2019. It has been difficult, as they had started when the first lockdown was implemented in the country. Fortunately, they did not give up and the locals still supported them throughout the lockdown levels.

Emma and Daphney Komani spend their whole day keeping watch over their fruit as they wait for customers.

Customers are lured in due to their competitive prices, compared to shops in town. “People come and support us because they know it is cheaper and that this is the only way we can support our families,” said Emma.  Emma and her mother travel all the way to Hoedspruit to get stock for their customers, as well as from different farms surrounding Hazyview especially, to support the community.

“A good month means that I have sold R8 000’s worth of fruit, and that is more than enough to get the necessary things for my daughter and the family,” said Daphney.  The many sellers who wait next to the road for customers to stop by, have regular meetings on what to sell and when. The seasonal fruit also makes an impact on whether they will sell enough for the months to come.
