Hone your drawing skills with Lowveld Figure Drawing

Lowveld Figure Drawing will be hosting its next drawing session on July 31 at The Bardolino Artist Retreat.

Lowveld Figure Drawing (LFD) was founded at the beginning of this year when Casandra Jacobs and Xenia de Lange saw a need for a figure drawing platform.

The founders’ mission with LFD is to create a safe and inclusive communal space for all artists in the Lowveld from all disciplines and of all skill levels, to come together and unite in their love and enjoyment of figure drawing.  They aim to create a respectful, courteous and friendly space that will allow for connections, collaborations and the establishment of a strong artistic community.

Jacobs explained that they hold drawing sessions once a month, usually during the last weekend.  The next session will take place on July 31 at The Bardolino Artist Retreat on the Hermansburg Road. This is only for persons aged 21 and older.

“While we are still in the early stages of building and promoting our platform, the response has been fantastic from our current participants, said Jacobs.  “We have a lot of interesting events, sponsorships and workshops planned. We also have many well-known local artists such as Dr Jack (Jack Swanepoel), Matthew Koster (Lazy River Studio), Maria Pienaar, and many more join us for drawing regularly.”

Jacobs said they are looking to build their relationship with local schools as well and would essentially like to hold a quarterly session at Uplands College. “Our session in June was held at Uplands with a clothed model and was a great success. We really want to encourage our local young talents to explore their boundaries and test their skills in the arts through figure drawing.”

LFD has many workshops and events planned, from guided sessions to sketchbook meet-ups in the botanical garden. Jacobs said the best would be to visit their Instagram (@lowveld_figure_drawing) and Facebook (@lowveld figure drawing) pages to keep up to date with what they have coming up.

“In October we have an incredible two-day guided workshop planned with famous South African artist Carl Jeppe. Uncle to the well-known local artist, Walter Voigt, Jeppe is an experienced figure drawing workshop host. We look very forward to welcoming him back to the Lowveld for the first workshop hosted in association with LFD.”
