Christmas comes to the Lowveld early

The Claremont community held its first-ever Christmas in July Market on Friday July 15.

It was cold. It was dark. And for many, the road to Die Stoor in Claremont was a new one.

But the Claremonters and those who braved the road enjoyed celebrating the first-ever Christmas in July on Friday July 15. Although the big man with the white beard seemed to have lost his way, Belinda Keun and her husband, André, the hosts of the feast, made it up by running around like Rudolf the red-nosed reindeer to ensure everyone was happy and catered for.

A massive bonfire kept the cold at bay, while visitors browsed the stalls selling such home-made items as sweets, scarves, wooden pens and toys, honey and jam. Traditional roosterkoek, pizza, pancakes and doughnuts kept the tummies full.

“We learnt a lot through this first effort, but be assured, this will become a highlight on the annual festive calendar in the Lowveld,” said Belinda.
