City of Mbombela commemorates Madiba Day at centre for disabled
The stakeholders painted the inner walls, planted some trees and cooked for the elderly.

The City of Mbombela’s executive mayor, Sibongile Makushe, members of her mayoral committee and some officials spent Mandela Day at the Sitimisele Disabled Centre in Mbonisweni near White River as part of the global celebrations to honour the former statesman, Nelson Mandela.
Makushe said this year’s theme was about doing whatever you can, where you are, with the little that you have. All hands were on deck and stakeholders rose to the challenge.

“When others were painting the inner walls, some were planting trees and the rest were either cooking for the elderly or ensuring that the vegetable garden was revived to ensure continued food security,” she said.

Makushe thanked everyone, from students of the University of Mpumalanga to community members who came in their numbers to support this worthy cause, and encouraged the community to always avail themselves when it come to assisting elders and people living with disabilities daily.

Meanwhile, one of the beneficiaries at the centre, Sicelo Mavuso, said he was happy to have received some food, and welcomed the visit from the municipality, because it showed they care.
“I hope to see them visit us regularly and assist us where they can. “The donation will make a difference in our lives, because some of us depend on this centre for survival. Let the spirit of Mandela continue to live among us,” Mavuso said.
