Limpopo rapist sentenced to 22 years behind bars

The court heard that between April 2018 and May 2019, Phasha had raped girls aged between 15 and 23.

SEKHUKHUNE – The Polokwane High Court sentenced Thapelo Tonny Phasha (22) of Ga-Mothapo on Thursday August 11 to an effective 22 years’ direct imprisonment for three counts of rape.

The court heard that between April 2018 and May 2019 in Ga-Mothapo, Phasha had raped girls aged between 15 and 23.

In the first incident he came across a victim, took her to the nearest bush and raped her. The second victim had been walking with her friend when Phasha approached and threatened them.

He took her to the mountainside and raped her twice. The third victim had been asked by Phasha to accompany him to his girlfriend’s place.

On their way he dragged the victim into the bush and raped her.

The accused pleaded guilty to all offences, to show that he was remorseful for his actions.

During the aggravation of the sentence, state advocate Sontaga Malefahlo submitted that offences of this nature are very prevalent in this country, and one of the victims was a minor during the commission of the crime.

The Limpopo National Prosecuting Authority welcomed the sentence and applauded Malefahlo’s good work and
Sergeant Sello Morerwa for ensuring that justice is served in the community.
