Four suspects arrested for possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition in Bushbuckridge

Two handguns and 33 rounds of ammunition were seized.

The police found ammunition and unlicensed firearms in Dwarsloop outside Bushbuckridge on Tuesday August 30 when they intercepted a VW Polo with four occupants.

A provincial police spokesperson, Selvy Mohlala, said acting on information received, the police intercepted the white VW Polo with four occupants who were suspected to be in possession of firearms. The men, aged between 26 and 27, were arrested on the R40, the Dwarsloop main road, with two handguns with serial numbers filled off and 33 rounds of ammunition.

Mohlala added that preliminary investigation indicates the vehicle they were using does not raise any suspicion yet, but it could have been stolen and further investigations would provide answers.
“The police will also investigate to establish if the suspects may be linked to other criminal activities committed elsewhere. The four appeared in the Bushbuckridge Magistrate’s Court on August 31 facing charges of being in possession of unlicensed firearms with ammunition,” he said.

The provincial commissioner of police, Lieutenant General Semakaleng Manamela, emphasised the importance of community members working with the police. “There will be no space for criminals in the province if we continue to work together in the battle to fight crime. The lives of innocent citizens were possibly spared by the recovery of the firearms as they are often used by perpetrators in serious and violent crimes.”
