Riverside City Improvement District empowers women
Safety was put first at a recent women's event held by the Riverside CID.
In celebration of International Women’s Day, the Riverside City Improvement District (CID) in partnership with Mahindra Dealership, hosted a #SafetyFirst event on August 20.
Businesses in the CID came together to educate and equip women with essential skills that could potentially save their lives.
“When a woman rises, the world rises, and so it has become a strategic goal of the CID to cultivate and encourage environments that help women succeed economically, as well as to do what we can to assist the prevention and response to gender-based violence,” said Jessica Prim, Riverside CID’s marketing co-ordinator.
At the event, Derek Kirkby, Master Drive training director, shared valuable information regarding what to do in the event of an unfortunate hijacking situation.

True to its business motto, “Making a difference, one day, one kilometre, one life at a time”, his knowledge in the field and practical demonstration left the women feeling empowered and liberated from their fear.
At the station sponsored by Hi-Q, under the guidance of business owner Gary Friend, the ladies had the opportunity to understand the intricacies of changing a tyre and familiarising themselves with the tips and tricks of the trade.
“We were very thankful for the opportunity to educate the ladies and enjoyed seeing them getting their hands dirty,” he said.
And what woman does not love a good spoil? Sorbet Nelspruit joined the event and treated the ladies to mini hand facials and skin care information, and sponsored wonderful prizes towards the pop-a-balloon prize draws that took place throughout the day.
“At Mahindra, we are passionate about empowering and upskilling women, and really enjoyed putting this event together,” said Julia Burger, freelance marketing manager for Mahindra.
Ending the day on a sweet note, all proceeds raised from the event’s entry fees were donated in full to Grace Baby Haven.
“The day was a success as a result of a collaborative effort from all who were involved, and we wish to acknowledge and thank the following event partners: Hi-Q Nelspruit, Sorbet Nelspruit, Mbombela Auto Care, Unwined Food and Wine Show, Get It Lowveld and Muse Magazine,” said Burger.
