Taxi driver killed in head-on accident on the R37
She said reckless driving is suspected, but the SAPS investigations will provide more information.
BURGERSFORT – The Limpopo Department of Transport and Community Safety has once again urged motorists on the R37 to drive with caution.
A middle-aged taxi driver from Diphale Village died when his taxi collided with an 18-wheel truck on the R37 next to the Driekop Post Office, on Tuesday at about 08:00.
“It is reported that a truck and Toyota Quantum minibus taxi collided headon, injuring 13 people in the taxi and
the truck driver. Unfortunately, the taxi driver died on the spot. The injured were transported to the nearby health facilities for medical attention,” said Tidimalo Chuene, spokesperson for the Limpopo Department
of Transport and Community Safety.
She said reckless driving is suspected, but the SAPS investigations will provide more information.
“The department takes this opportunity to wish the injured a speedy recovery, and reminds all motorists to drive with caution and to obey traffic rules at all times to arrive alive at their destinations,” Chuene said.
Motorists on the scene described the accident as horrific. “The taxi was transporting pupils to schools in Driekop and Riba Cross. Some of the passengers were kids from crèches and preschools. They were visibly in pain, and were seen lying next to the road,” said an eyewitness.
