Fred Kinnear Golf Day a success
Fred Kinnear was a well-known local businessman. He had wanted to hold a golf day for Pro Gratia, but died in 2021. His legacy came alive, however, thanks to these kind hearts.
The Fred Kinnear Invitational Golf Day at the Mbombela Golf Club on Friday September 9, to raise funds for the Pro Gratia Learning Centre, was deemed a great success.
Teams made up of various businesses across the Lowveld all joined in for the cause, playing the afternoon away before the prize-giving was held at the clubhouse later that evening.
Fred Kinnear was a very well-known local businessman who died following a battle with Covid in 2021, shortly after his wife had passed away. Kinnear was 79 at the time of his death. He was the developer and owner of the Canary Walk business centre east of the city centre. He had wanted to hold a golf day for Pro Gratia, but had died before this could be realised.

Canary Walk’s Carien Craig organised the special event. The total amount raised is still being calculated. Pro Gratia’s Ansie Viljoen said the feedback received from the guests regarding the golf day was overwhelming. “They could not stop talking about the excellent work and service the learners put in together with all the cooks involved to make this event a huge success,” said Viljoen.

“We thank Errieda du Toit, who came all the way from Cape Town to assist the learners to prepare all the food. Together with Unice-Ann Badenhorst of Yoons, they made roosterkoek, hummus, chicken liver paté, caprese sticks, sosaties and a nostalgic pudding.
“We also want to give a big thanks to Carien Craig and Tanya Cronje, who organised this event for Pro Gratia Learning Centre,” she said.
