Heritage festival braaiers give it their all in Mbombela

It was a day filled with music, laughter, delicious food and a big braai competition at the Vuur en Vlam Heritage Festival on Saturday September 24.

It was a big battle of the braais coupled with local entertainment and market stalls at the Vuur en Vlam Heritage Festival at Oewersig on Saturday.

Hosted by Solidariteit Helpende Hand Laeveld in celebration of Heritage Day, the event offered a meet and greet with the Airlink Pumas and White River runner Caroline Josten, who placed 15th in her first Comrades Marathon in August.

The day’s main event, however, was the braai competition, with various businesses and organisations all competing to see who produced the best braai.

The judges were judges Pieter Malan, also known as PappaChef, the DA councillor and community activist Thea Rix, Kobus Steenkamp and the Provincial Mpumalanga MS 2022 winner, Bernadine Swanepoel.

Zané van Zyl was one of the performers at the event.

The event had live entertainment throughout the day from local artists such as Zané van Zyl, Sias du Plooy, Debbie Kriel, Alicia van Luik and Marlene van der Walt.

The winners of the braai competition were announced later on in the day and the Wild in Africa team took home the title of the braai masters.

The Care Buddies also had a stall at the Vuur en Vlam Heritage Festival and sold delicious jaffles.

In second place was the team from Uniwisp, and in third place was Smoking Hot.

Solidariteit Helpende Hand Laeveld’s Elize Visser said a raffle was also held, in which one lucky person won a rugby jersey signed by the entire Pumas team.

“The Vuur en Vlam Heritage Festival will be back next year on September 23, and we expect it to be bigger and better. Thanks to everyone, from the stallholders and braaiers to the community who came out to support the day and even the event organisers. The whole event was a great success,” she said.
