Slam poetry grand finale in White River this weekend

The finale will start at 14:00 on Saturday, October 8 with tickets available for purchase at the door for R100 per person.

Mbombela’s very first Words in my Mouth poetry slam grand finale will take place this weekend at Yoons Eatery at White River Crossing on Saturday October 8.

The grand finale is a culmination of eight months’ worth of rounds to find Mbombela’s top five poetry slam performers and is set to be an exciting showcase of local creative talent.

Words in my Mouth slam poetry was founded five years ago by local Menzi Mkhonza as a way to create a platform for poets and creatives within the Lowveld community.

Mkhonza said the first rounds of the competition started in March this year and consisted of eight “episodes” (rounds).

The episodes ran once every month and enabled 20 people to sign up to perform and stand the chance to win a R500 cash prize at the end of each episode.

The poets are scored via a system and the top five would then move on to the next round with 15 new poets.

“The idea was that people come and perform their poetry consistently, not to just win the R500 cash prize, but to score enough points from each episode to reach the grand finale,” said Mkhonza.

The finale will start at 14:00 at Yoons Eatery and will see five local poets competing for a cash prize of R3 000.

Tickets can be purchased at the door for R100.

“People can expect innovative, original, and thought-provoking performances from five poets at the grand finale,” said Mkhonza.

“We live in a country where a lot of things are happening and difficult conversations need to be had surrounding what is currently going on. With poetry, we can approach these tricky topics in a more mellow way.

“We are really excited for the event. It will be the first finale to occur in Mbombela since the movement’s foundation five years ago,” he said.

Mkhonza said his aim with the finale and the movement in general is to create an established poetry platform here in the Lowveld where local musicians, artists and content creators can come together and build a solid industry.
