Limpopo Highway Patrol arrests suspect for alleged stock theft

An alleged cattle thief was scheduled to appear in the Nebo Magistrate’s Court on charges of stock theft on October 26.

The 40-year-old suspect was arrested by the Limpopo Highway Patrol (LHP) team on Sunday morning after he was allegedly found in possession of suspected stolen cattle at Brooklyn Village.

The members were busy with their normal patrol duties along the R579 public road at Ga-Moloi, when they spotted a suspicious Toyota Hilux with no registration numbers driving at a high speed.

“They followed the vehicle and attempted to stop it but it did not, and a chase ensued from Glen-Cowie until Brooklyn where they managed to stop the bakkie. “Two suspects alighted from the vehicle and tried to flee on foot, but one of them was arrested and taken back to the bakkie.

“The police opened the back cover of the bakkie and found three cows with one calf,” said the Limpopo police spokesperson, Brigadier Motlafelo Mojapelo. He said the suspect was interrogated about the origin of the animals, but he failed to give satisfactory answers and was apprehended immediately for being in possession of suspected stolen cattle. The motor vehicle that was used for the commission of the crime was also seized on the scene.

According to the police, further information indicated that other cattle were stolen and transported to Dennilton.

The SAPS proceeded to the said place and later found three cows, which had allegedly been stolen from Nokaneng Village in Steelpoort.

The police have called on livestock owners who might have recently lost some of their cattle, to come to the Nebo SAPS for purposes of positive identification.

The provincial commissioner of Limpopo, Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe, has lauded the work performed by the members of the LHP in arresting the suspect and recovering the stolen livestock.
