One person dies in horrific accident on the R555 in Steelpoort
With both the R555 and R37 being revamped in Tubatse, Chuene has urged motorists to exercise caution on both roads.
One person died when a Toyota Fortuner collided head-on with a UD truck on Friday.
The accident happened on the R555 in Steelpoort, next to Marlotti Lodge at about 10:20. It took several hours for the SAPS and paramedics to clear the road. This led to traffic congestion on the Riba Cross and Olifantspoortjie alternative roads.
According to eyewitnesses, the Fortuner was heading to Steelpoort while the road construction truck was travelling from the opposite direction.
“The man driving the Toyota Fortuner was certified dead by the EMS personnel at the scene. The truck driver had sustained serious injuries and was rushed to the Dilokong Hospital,” said the Limpopo’s Department of Transport and Community Safety spokesperson, Tidimalo Chuene.
With both the R555 and R37 being revamped in Tubatse, Chuene has urged motorists to exercise caution on both roads.
Meanwhile, the Limpopo MEC for transport and community safety, Florence Radzilani, sent condolences to the family of the deceased.
“We are deeply saddened by the news and pray for the departed soul, and the families he leaves behind. We also pray for the healing of the man who sustained injuries in the accident.
“The responsibility for road safety lies with all of us as drivers. We are therefore continuing as a department, to make a clarion call to motorists, to become a part of the road safety crusade, and be responsible road users at all times, for all to arrive alive,” said Radzilani.
