Local swimmer makes waves in Thailand

Byron Venter recently excelled at a major open-water swimming event, the Oceanman. He now has his eyes set on the world champs.

Byron Venter (26) first took up open-water swimming last year when he competed in a 3km open ocean swim in Pattaya, Thailand. That’s when the bug bit him and he has not looked back since.

On May 20 and 21, Venter took part in a major open-water swimming event at the same venue, the Oceanman.

This event offers different categories; a 2km, 5km and 10km sprint. Venter chose to swim the 2km sprint and proved to perform well under pressure. Out of 102 participants competing in it, Venter managed to secure a third-place podium finish.

Along with his top-three finish, Venter qualified for the world championships in Phuket, Thailand on December 3 and will represent his country with pride.

Venter grew up in the Kruger National Park. He attended Skukuza Primary and finished his school career at Hoërskool Rob Ferreira in White River. He currently trains in a 25m pool for open-water competitions.
