Repair project completed after sinkhole damaged road in Lydenburg

Barko Developments came to the aid of Thaba Chweu Local Municipality (TCLM) to repair a sinkhole and low-water bridge.

A nine-week construction project was finished in Viljoen Street on Tuesday July 4. Barko Developments managed the project after a sinkhole formed on April 28.

Excessive rain resulted in the collapse of the road surface and caused damage to the low-water bridge next to the sinkhole.

After an initial site visit with TCLM, Barko re-evaluated the project and found a permanent refurbishment solution.

“Debris had to be removed from the sinkhole, and Barko excavated and cleared the site. The storm-water pipes underneath the road surface were deteriorating. The workers carted away debris, old mud, and soil and moulded suitable bedding for new pipes. We are very proud of the team which came to the aid of the town,” said Monique Pretorius, property manager of Barko Developments.

Pretorius said that the project included compaction and backfilling with suitable material. It included the installation of new pipes between the headwall and the culvert bridge wall. Thick asphalt was reinstated and the refurbishment ensured a stronger, usable bridge.
