Severe weather warning as cold and wet conditions hit Mpumalanga

The SAWS predicted thunderstorms and the possibility of localised flooding for the Lowveld and escarpment areas of Mpumalanga.

The current cold front, which has resulted in a drop in temperatures in Mpumalanga, has also brought with it the possibility of localised flooding in the region.

The SAWS issued a yellow level 2 warning this morning, July 10, for the possibility of severe thunderstorms in the Lowveld and escarpment areas of Mpumalanga.

The service warns that heavy rainfall can be expected over the eastern part of the province. Strong winds and hail may also occur and lead to localised damage to infrastructure, informal settlements, properties, vehicles and livestock.

According to an advisory sent by the SAWS, maximum temperatures will struggle to reach 10ºC in many places, and will be below 5ºC over the eastern Highveld and along the escarpment.

Cold temperatures will also bring forth possible disruptive snowfall in Belfast, Dullstroom, the Roossenekal Pass, Mariepskop and Mount Anderson.

The weather service advises small stock farmers and the public that the very cold and wet conditions may pose a risk to livestock, crops and plants.

If you find yourself on the roads, drive carefully, as the roads are wet and may be slippery. Switch on your vehicle headlights, as mist may impair visibility.
