Snow makes landfall on Long Tom Pass and in Dullstroom, drivers warned to be vigilant

The South African Weather Service issued a warning that the accumulation of snow might result in the closing of mountain passes, like the Long Tom Pass. The public is urged to be careful on the roads.

Tourists and snow chasers from neighbouring towns waited excitedly for snow to fall on the Long Tom Pass and in Dullstroom today, July 10.

One of the snow viewers, Alicia Whitting from Mbombela, said, however, vehicles were struggling to navigate the slippery mountain pass this evening.

Whitting and a group of friends were on their way back from Hops Hollow Brewery to Mbombela at around 19:00 when she said cars had parked zigzag across the road.

In restaurants and pubs in Dullstroom, members of the public had also waited in anticipation, and they were not disappointed. An ice rain throughout the day indicated that snow may follow. It started falling at 18:20.

The South African Weather Service (SAWS) warned that the accumulation of snow might result in the closing of mountain passes, like the Long Tom Pass, and the loss of livestock. People are urged to be vigilant on the roads.

According to SAWS, freezing conditions are expected to persist, and temperatures may plummet to between 0 and -3°C with a maximum of 5°C in Dullstroom and Lydenburg tomorrow.
