Focus and determination on Lowveld roads during the 2023 Jock Classic

One of the oldest road cycle races in South Africa, the Jock Classic, concluded on July 16. The race asked some tuff questions of the cyclists. Casper Kruger answered those questions with ease and raced to victory in the 140km race.

Cyclists from all walks of life gathered to push their limits and compete in three challenging races at the oldest cycling event in Mpumalanga – the Jock Classic.

The event attracted both professional riders and enthusiastic amateurs on July 16, creating a vibrant and competitive atmosphere.

According to Hendrik Wagener of H&A Toere, the race participation had grown immensely compared to 2022. “Last year, 117 cyclists competed. It grew to 273 this year,” Wagener told Lowvelder.

In the 60km race, which started at Patena Pancakes in Sabie, the participants embarked on a fast-paced journey through the picturesque Lowveld countryside. The cyclists displayed remarkable speed and agility as they navigated winding roads and conquered challenging ascents. Megan Botha, competing in the girls U17 category, won the 60km race with a time of 01:57:29.25.

The 100km race kicked off at White River Crossing and provided a more demanding test for the riders, pushing them to their limits both physically and mentally. The course featured a mix of flat stretches and gruelling climbs, requiring competitors to employ strategic tactics and conserve energy. Stian Lansberg (03:08:46.55) of Middelburg competed in the junior men’s category and claimed victory after the 100km, while Carla Oberholzer (03:22:20.03) came out on top in the elite ladies’ category over this distance.

For those seeking the ultimate challenge, the 140km race provided an epic test of strength and endurance. Participants tackled a demanding course that included steep mountain passes and long stretches of undulating terrain. The elite and U23 men competed in this brutal race.

The 140km race was won by Casper Kruger of Honeycomb Pro Cycling in a time of 03:48:49.47. Kruger maintained a pace of 36.7km/h to finish on the top step of the podium.

In the veterans category during this long race, Frans Fourie came in first place, clocking in with a time of 04:13:54.11.

“We have gotten very positive feedback. Everyone said they’ll be back again next year and will even bring some friends,” Wagener said after the event.

Overall, the Jock Classic showcased the passion and dedication of these cyclists as they pushed themselves to new heights.
