Resounding double victory for Curro on the rugby field
Curro Nelspruit's first and second rugby teams are the 2023 Mpumalanga Medium Schools' Rugby champions.

Curro Nelspruit recently made history by clinching not only one, but two of the championship titles in the Mpumalanga Medium Schools’ Rugby Championships.
Both the school’s second and first teams came out tops during their final encounters July 22.
Curro’s second team played in the final for the first time and went head to head with Middelburg’s Hoërskool Kanonkop. The match got off to a slow start as the sides eased into the game. Curro, however, pulled ahead early on and retained their lead to clinch the title 15-10.

Facing off against Hoërskool Lydenburg, the home side’s first team had their work cut out for them.
Both teams had shown exceptional skill and resilience in the earlier rounds, making this a much-awaited showdown. Curro boasted a track record of 14 wins out of 15 heading into the final.
The atmosphere was electric as the two schools’ rugby powerhouses took to the field, determined and ready for a tightly contested encounter.
Lydenburg came out guns blazing and added points to the board early on. Curro found their footing and struck back with a try of their own. Both teams produced exciting rugby and the spectators couldn’t have hoped for a better-matched game. The sides played hard, physically and mentally and it came down to who wanted it the most.

When the final whistle blew, Curro had secured a resounding victory, with a remarkable score of 40-21. Their jubilation was palpable as they celebrated their win. Morné Crous, head coach of Curro’s first team praised his players’ dedication and hard work, stating that this triumph was a testament to their commitment and passion for the game.
“We are very proud of the boys and the hard work put into every game. This victory certainly showed that Curro is able to compete and stand their ground against other schools,” Crous said.
He said it was a very physical match. ”The main thing we focused on during the game was to minimise our mistakes and keep ball position,” he said, and added that their defensive efforts worked out for them in the end. But most of all, Crous said, the team played for one another, which was also a decisive factor.
Curro’s rugby triumph over Lydenburg not only crowned them the champions, but also served as a reminder of the power of teamwork, skill and determination.
Next on Curro’s list is the Noordvaal Tournament. They will play against the Limpopo-based side, Hoërskool Piet Potgieter, on Saturday, July 29 at 12:00 on home turf.
