Lydenburg SAPS warns against cellphone app scams
Residents are urged to contact the police if they have proof that any money was stolen from their bank accounts after downloading a certain Checkers app.

A case of fraud is being investigated by the Lydenburg SAPS.
On August 18, the cellphone numbers of two women were used to gain access to their bank accounts.
Two suspects approached these women in a parking area and said they would assist them to download the Checkers app. They claimed they were Checkers employees.

“The women provided their cellphone numbers. The suspects allegedly gave these to a third party. The women received a notification on their phones to confirm that the Checkers app would have access to their phones. The suspects used this permission to gain access to their bank accounts, and transfer an undisclosed amount of money to their own,” said Sergeant Cave Dilebo, the Lydenburg SAPS’s spokesperson.
The community is requested to contact Lieutenant Colonel Owen Dibakwane on 079 519 5797 should they require any assistance with similar cases. They are requested to provide bank statements as proof that they fell victim to this scam.
