Special learners celebrate African cultures at school concert in Mbombela

The KaMagugu Inclusive School recently held a colourful and fun dance concert for its learners living with disabilities.

To create awareness about the capabilities of children living with disabilities, the KaMagugu Inclusive School hosted a dance concert at the Mbombela Civic Centre September 8 and 9.

The children brought brightness and shimmer to the stage and danced away the weekend.

KaMagugu Inclusive School’s Debbie Cresswell said the aim of the concert was to educate the community that despite the learners’ disabilities, they have many abilities and can achieve great things if given a chance to do so. “We also wanted the parents to feel proud of their children with special needs and to celebrate their achievements.”

Cresswell said the dancing and singing is such a big part of the African culture, and the learners were quite excited to showcase the different cultures while dancing in unique attire.

“We wanted to achieve various goals through this concert, such as teambuilding for all staff and learners, to expose the learners to other areas and types of music, creative decor and costumes, which enriches their skills curriculum in arts and crafts, and to raise funds for the school.”

The schoolchildren all bright and ready to perform.

Cresswell said the concert was a success. “We ran a fundraising campaign from the start of the year and managed to raise more than R30 000, which all went to the concert. We received more support from locals and are grateful for their contribution to its success.
